Science and Technology INSET – Whole Day

Delegates need to bring their own lunch – tea and coffee will be provided.
This INSET at Golden Grove Primary consists of 2 half day sessions.
Schools can choose to book:
- £150 plus VAT per delegate for the whole day (schools are welcome to send different members of staff for the AM and PM sessions.)

Science & Technology progression PS1-PS3 – Karen Mills & Nerys Tudor Jones

This course looks at the progression of Science & Technology skills, which highlight the rich opportunities for literacy, numeracy and digital skills. The course also includes £250 worth of resources (Stepping Stones for S & T plus Science bank of Investigations)
PM Session 1 – 3 pm Choose one of the following:
PS1/PS2 – DT INSET – Nerys Tudor Jones
This is a hands-on session, where delegates will develop their understanding of the different areas in Design and Technology through practical team challenges.
PS3 – Science INSET – Karen Mills
This session will look at the progression of Science Skills and how to teach them in the classroom

Karen Mills
SCIENCE and OUTDOOR LEARNING - Karen Mills is passionate about Science and Outdoor Learning. She was the Curriculum Improvement Advisor for Science and ESDGC for Newport CC, as well as the regional coordinator for ESDGC Schools Networks. She has an M.A. in Early Years Education.
Karen was a member of the working party for DCELLS Science Curriculum 2008. She was co-author of Module 6 for the Foundation Phase and was a member of the WAG working group that developed ESDGC 'A Common Understanding for Schools’.

Nerys Tudor Jones
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - Nerys has 20 years teaching experience in Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 in five different primary schools and three authorities. She has been senior leader in 2 and Deputy Head Teacher for 6 years. During this time Nerys Tudor Jones also worked on Welsh Government projects to write new materials and produce resources, including assessments and examples of best practice. She has presented at a Welsh Government conference on cluster, transition and enterprise projects. She has presented at the Birmingham NEC on various successful design and technology projects including food technology, computer aided designs, healthy eating weeks, electrical and computer control. Nerys was invited to represent Wales in the James Dyson Innovation Group, which involved working on an innovative project, incorporating Literacy, Numeracy and thinking skills.
Other experience:
Nerys’ passion for Design and Technology began in secondary school, where she achieved an ‘A’ grade for Design & Technology at A level, before going on to study at university, completing a 4 year B.Ed specialising in D&T.
Nerys Tudor Jones is an author of educational books and was a recipient of a prestigious National D&T teaching award. She has worked on various projects with the Design and Technology Association as her role in the Primary Advisory Group, which includes ‘Projects on a Page’.
In addition to working with Collective Learning as a course provider, Nerys is also Primary Consultant in Design & Technology working alongside schools, running INSET and providing support for schools in the effective delivery of D&T. Nerys believes it is an exciting time for Wales with Prof Donaldson’s recommendations recognising the importance of Science of Technology as an AoLE.
