The Five Mathematical Proficiencies Explained – Online Course
In the AoLE for Mathematics and Numeracy the model of progression is based on the development of five interdependent proficiencies: conceptual understanding, communication using symbols, fluency, logical reasoning and strategic competence.
This course looks in detail at the 5 proficiencies. It explains what they are, why they are important and how they underpin the mathematics curriculum.
The asynchronous course consists of a video PPT presentation with a series of topics for staff discussion. The course lasts for about 2 hours, if you complete all the discussion tasks, and is divided into two sessions.
Session 1 is an introduction with an overview of the 5 proficiencies and answers the question, “what are the 5 proficiencies?”
Session 2 is the longer session and explains the 5 proficiencies in detail. This session answers the questions, “why are the 5 proficiencies important?” and “how do the 5 proficiencies underpin the mathematics curriculum?”
The session ends with a document that can be used as an audit or self-reflection tool.
